The Dusty Dog

  • Christmas December 23, 2013When I say Christmas you probably think of sweets, sparkles, Santa, baking, gathering, sharing, and probably even yard blow-up decorations, (especially if you live in Dallas, those blow up things are EVERYWHERE).  But, if you live in New Mexico, Christmas has an entirely different meaning.  Here, where chile rules and comes on top of just ...
  • Home & Homemade Tuscan Bean Soup November 22, 2013I know you’re sick of hearing me talk about unpacking boxes and sorting and organizing.  But, I’ll bet you that I’m even more sick of actually unpacking the boxes and sorting and organizing.  I have good news – I AM DONE!  There are still a few things left to hang on the wall and a ...
  • I’ve Landed November 18, 2013Well hello gnocchi no. 9 fans – I’ve missed you!  It’s been a whirlwind as you already know, and it’s still whirling, but not as out of control as it was before we landed back at the Dusty Dog.  I don’t want to make excuses for why I haven’t been happily cooking and documenting recipes ...
  • We’ve Got A LOT of Catching Up to Do! October 1, 2013 You must be worried sick about where I’ve been.  Wondering…have I been in a car accident?  Have I been kidnapped and held for ransom?  Have I thrown in my apron and abandoned the blog ship?  Calm down, it’s nothing like that.  So, just exactly where have I been?  Well grab a glass of wine, have ...
  • Catahoulas, Hummingbirds, & Bears Oh My! July 20, 2013 I’ve been alone out here in the mountains this week while Rhonda has been in Dallas working.  With our brood of eight animals someone has to stay behind and manage the clan.  That someone is me.  This is an every couple of week stint for us.  Rhonda goes to Dallas, and I stay at the ...
  • Vegetarian Baked Beans for July Fourth July 4, 2013 Fireworks, sparklers, hot summer sun, cookouts, and baked beans.  When I was growing up, summertime was my favorite time, and to me, the Fourth of July was the best holiday of the summer season.  I lived in a tiny town of 2400 people in rural, central Pennsylvania where I left the house in the morning ...
  • The Dusty Dog July 1, 2013 Two humans, three canines, five felines, 678 miles, 11 hours in an overpacked car and we made it to the Dusty Dog on Wednesday.  We My partner shops for this journey as if we are going to the far reaches of Antarctica and as if there are no grocery stores once we get here.  I’ll ...
  • Heirloom Yellow Eye Beans March 4, 2013 This past holiday season, I got a lot of cooking related gifts — things like ravioli presses, a comal for making tortillas, and an attachment for my mixer to make homemade pasta.  But one of my favorite presents was a gift set of heirloom beans from Rancho Gordo.  The set included three types of different ...
  • Onion, Barley, & Cannellini Bean Soup February 18, 2013 A couple of years ago, I received an orange Staub soup pot with an acorn handle as a gift from my partner.  I don’t remember if it was a present for a special occasion or just a gift because I was going to make soup and didn’t have a good soup pot.  Regardless,  I loved it from ...
  • Gnocchi 101 January 2, 2013 Although I discovered these wonderful potato and flour dumplings at a party 20 years ago, I still feel like I’m new to gnocchi.  It was love at first sight when I spotted those small pillows of potato tucked in a pot of rich tomato sauce at my friend’s house.  I loaded up a plateful and ...
